An invoicing tool for fewer than 10 invoices a month: what makes sense?

Most invoicing tools are priced for people who invoice every week. If you send three, five or eight a month, a bookkeeping suite charges you for limits you never reach and features you never use. At a low invoice count the sum is different.

Two pricing models

Per invoice. You make the invoice without an account, see the preview for free and pay €0.50 for the clean PDF. No subscription, nothing to cancel. You do retype your own details and your client’s each time, and you keep track of what is still open yourself.

A small plan. For €2.50 per month you make up to 7 invoices and 7 quotes per month, with saved clients, automatic numbering, reminders that go out by themselves, online payments with iDEAL and a bank link that ticks off paid invoices. Cancellable monthly.

The break-even point

Divide the plan price by the price per one-off invoice and you have the number of invoices per month at which the plan becomes cheaper. Below that number paying per invoice is cheaper, provided you accept the manual steps: retyping details, keeping the numbering, sending reminders yourself.

Most freelancers with regular clients quickly pass that number, or value the reminders and the bank link above the difference. Anyone who really invoices only now and then stays cheaper per invoice.

Why not free?

Free plans from bookkeeping software are a step into a paid plan and usually lack exactly what saves time: reminders and the bank link. Anyone who sends a few invoices a month and wants to save time on them is better off with a small paid plan than with a free plan that leaves the reminding to you.
